San Diego International Airport’s (SAN) Performing Arts Program provides a unique platform to celebrate San Diego’s culture and diverse talent in dance, theater, and live music, through an ongoing concert series, special performances, and residencies. The program supports the Airport’s purpose to deliver an exceptional airport experience and extend its Good Feelings, Nonstop brand. SAN’s Arts Program launched its Performing Arts Residency Program in 2016. The program cultivates the local performing arts community by inviting artist groups/collectives to develop and perform new work that is inspired by, and enlivens, the airport environment.
Malashock Dance proposes a residency at the San Diego airport, offering an incredibly unique opportunity for travelers to participate in its “You Are Here/Usted Está Aquí” project. “You Are Here/Usted Está Aquí” is a multi-iteration dance project that integrates a wide range of oral histories from San Diego residents and visitors to bring vibrant community narratives to life. Oral history interviews gathered from diverse communities and individuals in San Diego will form the soundtrack for the dance performances, which include solo, duet, and group choreography that is responsive and representative of the narrative. This work is embodied by Malashock Dance Company members under the direction of Christopher K. Morgan.
