This class will explore dynamic contemporary techniques with an emphasis on cultivating a safe and creative space. We will be aiming our focus on cultivating and maturing our performance quality, ranging from improvisation to classical modern contemporary techniques. Some classes will start on the floor and slowly build up to standing, exploring movement in diverse relationships to gravity. Other classes will start with individual task-based guided improvisation. We will end with a phrase that utilizes the explorations and tasks from class for a holistic contemporary study.

Reconnect with your practice and artists in our San Diego dance community through a rotating monthly series of drop-in technique classes featuring current and former MD company members, choreographers, and faculty. With a drop-in schedule every Wednesday night, this series fosters meaningful ways to get to know an artist deeply over the course of a month, while providing a wide array of artists for intermediate to advanced students to study with.

Nick McGhee started dancing at 15 at Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, CA. After attending Mira Costa College, he received his BFA in dance from Cal State Long Beach. While completing his undergrad, Nick had the opportunity to perform for several highly esteemed choreographers such as Keith Johnson, Kevin Williamson, and Micaela Taylor. Nick dances for the LITVAKdance company based in Encinitas, CA. Nick has had the privilege to work with Josh Manculich, Ronen Izhaki, Chuck Wilt, Rebecca Margolick, and Ido Gidron. He has also performed in the CDC fest in Orlando, FL, and in the Seattle International Dance Festival. Nick also works as a bartender at California Pizza Kitchen, and additionally works in graphic design. Nick is currently studying to achieve his master’s in psychotherapy.
