MALASHOCK DANCE PERFORMS AT THE SAN DIEGO MUSEUM OF ART
March 23, 2024
For immediate release:
Malashock Dance will create and perform a program of contemporary dance for SDMA’s patrons in the James S. Copley Auditorium at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. Six professional dancers and one musician will perform three separate dance pieces, including a new choreographic work inspired by Arshile Gorky’s painting, CHILD’S COMPANION, on loan to SDMA, choreographed by Christopher K. Morgan. The performance features interactive conversation and a rare opportunity to experience two choreographic interpretations of the same work of art.
The program will include 4 works and an interactive component.
A POINTED CONVERSATION is a duet choreographed by John Malashock in response to a Henry Moore sculpture, performed in conjunction with the O’Keeffe/Moore exhibition. Live music is composed and played by Rann Golamco.
CONVERGENCE is a work co-choreographed by John Malashock and Jessica Rabanzo-Flores, also utilizing live music composed and played by Rann Golamco, the spouse of choreographer Jessica Rabanzo-Flores.
Perhaps the most unique aspect of this performance will be the process session and audience discussion. A fascinating compare and contrast and demonstration showing the process of creating choreography inspired by the Gorky painting, including how movement is created; examples of choreographic connections to the art work; and interactive engagement with the audience’s responses and questions. Each choreographer will illuminate how they interpret visual art as a dance work.
COMPANIONS (New work) will be choreographed by Christopher K. Morgan in response to Arshile Gorky’s CHILD’S COMPANION.
The entire program will run approximately 55 minutes
