These four unique voices come together to present an evening of emotional strength and resilience through riveting choreography in the intimate setting of the Abbe Wolfsheimer Studio at Malashock Dance.
Propulsion promises an exciting journey through the many facets of life and personal relationships. Audiences will witness an array of human emotions, such as anticipation, perseverance, compassion, and joy. Musically driven choreography will highlight the strength and agility of some of San Diego’s elite professional dancers, as they articulate these emotions with authenticity and grace.
JUNE 1 – 3, 2017
MINOR FALL, MAJOR LIFT will be a bi-coastal collaboration of live music and dance, featuring all-new Malashock choreography, set to stirring new music by composers affiliated with New Amsterdam Records (Brooklyn, NY), played live by the world-renowned NOW Ensemble (New York).
The program will consist of five new interconnected choreographic works by John Malashock, to music by five different composers, including a commissioned score by Judd Greenstein, who is the founding Co-Director of New Amsterdam Records and is a Composer-in-Residence with NOW Ensemble.
Malashock Dance (San Diego) and Art of Élan (San Diego) will produce this program. New Amsterdam Records was selected because of their uniquely innovative model that supports artists who defy genre and push aesthetic boundaries. Working with different composers will create a program full of contrasting and complementary elements. This dynamic variety will challenge the choreographer and musicians to reach beyond their creative comfort zone and bring audiences on a journey through this creative landscape.
Known for his daring and athletic partnering and keen sense of musicality, Malashock is the perfect choreographer to work with such boundary-pushing composers. The NOW Ensemble will share the stage with the dancers, and this will provide an added synergy and heighten the connection between dancers and musicians. Live music adds powerful energy to the performance, and MINOR FALL, MAJOR LIFT will demonstrate a new approach to this most primal of artistic pairings.
