Malashock Dance through Summer

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 by generaladmin

The Malashock Dance Summer Intensive is fast approaching and it will be two weeks of non-stop dance featuring classes in technique, new works, repertory (not only Malashock repertory but also repertory by guest artists Keith Johnson and Bradley Lundberg), as well as mini-workshops in Dance Photography, Partnering, Contact Improvisation and Dance Stories (with John Malashock).

With regard to my piece for my New Works class, I have found some wonderful music by KODO that is both exhilarating and inspiring.  Anyone who knows my movement, knows the piece with be fast-paced, somewhat leggy and a lot of fun.  In repertory, I will be resetting sections of TRIBES (choreography by John Malashock), which was just performed at the Jewish Arts Festival this past June.

New works, repertory and more will be performed at the Summer Intensive Showcase at The Saville Theater on July 17th.  And remember, if you would like to be an apprentice or company member with MALASHOCK DANCE, you can use the Summer Intensive as your audition. We have a full season of rehearsals, performances and touring, including:

CHAGALL/TRIBES at Oceanside Museum of Art in October 2010, MALASHOCK/RAW in November 2010 and the premiere of THE FLOATING WORLD at the San Diego Museum of Art over four weekends in April 2011.

What a privilege it was for us to work with such talented, hard-working students and professionals.  They all were truly amazing.

In August, Michael and John begin choreographing their new dances for the fall production.  Michael will premiere SINNLICHE BEGIERDE, an evocative new work utilizing the vocals of German counter-tenor Klaus Nomi.  John will premiere AFTER DUST, a triptych of duets featuring performances by several Malashock Dance favorites as well as newcomer Theresa Anton.  These new works will premiere at the Lyceum Theater in downtown San Diego on October 10 & 11, 2009.

Additionally, Michael has been commissioned by Michigan Dance Collective to create a new work for their fall show.  He travels to Traverse City August 22nd – August 29th to start initial choreography and teach several master classes.

THE MALASHOCK DANCE SCHOOL SPRING SHOWCASE was held at Sushi: A Center for the Urban Arts this past weekend and was a great success.  On Sunday, the show was completely sold out – we squeezed in more than 90 people – and the dancers “danced” amazingly.  The showcase included performances by the students of The Malashock Dance School as well as the participants of the New Works Workshops.  John Malashock premiered his new work, Unsettled , Michael Mizerany debut his work for eight women, Total Eclipse , and Katie Griffin and Matt Carney performed a new dance they choreographed jointly, Dreams .

As a reminder, the MALASHOCK DANCE SUMMER WORKSHOP INTENSIVE is fast approaching.  Plus a new development:  Due to larger than expected enrollment, Joe Alter, associate professor and coordinator of the dance division at San Diego State University, has been added to the Summer Workshop Faculty.  He is the Artistic Director of the Joe Alter Dance Group and also currently performs with Leslie Seiter’s Little Known Dance Theater.

On the touring front, MALASHOCK DANCE will be spending a week in the Midwest at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in March/April of 2010.  In addition to a company performance, we will offer three master classes including advanced modern technique, intermediate modern technique and a class in partnering.

And of special note:  John Malashock has been elected to the Board of Trustees for DANCE/USA , the national service organization for professional dance.  This is a tremendous honor for John, and he looks forward to being an enthusiastic representative. John will start his three year term on July 1, 2009.

We had the pleasure to host (in association with the LA JOLLA MUSIC SOCIETY) a MASTER CLASS WITH BALLET PRELJOCAJ this past week and many San Diego dancers took advantage of this great opportunity.  Ayo Jackson, company member with BALLET PRELJOCAJ, taught a wonderful class and the students (who ranged in age for 12 – 50) looked phenomenal.  An added bonus, Ayo Jackson was just beautiful to watch.

Shadow of Mercy - On the Fast Track

Monday, April 6th, 2009 by malashockdance

SHADOW OF MERCY (The Leonard Cohen Project) is fast approaching and all the pieces are looking great.  We are putting the final touches on all the dance works and will have a full program run on Thursday.

This concert is going to be quite the endurance test.  Though we are employing ten dancers (5 men, 5 women), there is no way around a few of us doing 3 or 4 pieces in a row.  Stamina, of course, is always an issue but also a challenge: getting in and out of costumes quickly and efficiently, usually with minimal lighting and lots of sweat. As any dancer can tell you, this can prove to be the most stressful part of performing.

On Saturday, The Malashock Dance School had the Scholarship Auditions for both the MALASHOCK DANCE SUMMER IN SAN DIEGO WORKSHOP and THE NEW WORKS WORKSHOP .  Attendance was great and the dancers were terrific.  We also had 8 DVD auditions including three students submitting via YouTube.  Technology has made my life much easier.  Who knows, in the future we may do our entire workshop audition via DVD and YouTube submissions.  That way, I can stay in my pajamas.

On the promotional front, Danielle Gano, our PR Associate from Elle Communications, and several of her interns were making the rounds in San Diego hanging posters and distributing postcards.  Keep your eyes open for the preview article in the UNION TRIBUNE next Sunday, as well as Carla Hockley’s segment on Cox 4.

Also, if you want a preview of the SHADOW OF MERCY concert, Lara Segura, Heidi Kershaw and I will be performing TAKE THIS WALTZ as part of SPRING FLING on Saturday, April 11th at 12:45 pm on The South Promenade at Liberty Station .

In addition, Lara Segura and I will perform the duet from THE GYPSY’S WIFE at 4×4xFLOOR at The Bluefoot Bar and Lounge on April 14th at 7 pm.  THE GYPSY’S WIFE (the story of a none-too-chaste woman and her long-suffering husband) is one of those pieces, as Karen Walker from WILL & GRACE would say, “It’s funny because it’s sad.”

The ADF will be this summer in Durham, NC from June 11-July 25, 2009. The Festival will investigate the influences that modern dance and ballet have had on one another through performance and panel discussions, among other activities.
Since 1934, the ADF has remained committed to serving the needs of dance, dancers, choreographers, and professionals in dance-related fields.
Remaining true to the goals of its founding artists, the ADF’s programs are developed based on its mission: to encourage and support the creation and presentation of new modern dance work by both established and emerging choreographers; to preserve our modern dance heritage through continued presentation of classic works, as well as through archival efforts;
to build wider national and international audiences for modern dance; to enhance public understanding and appreciation of the art form and its cultural and historical significance; to provide a sound scientific/aesthetic base for professional education and training of young dancers and a forum for integrating and disseminating information on dance education.
The ADF is an international magnet for choreographers, dancers, teachers, critics, musicians and scholars, drawing them together to experiment, explore, learn, collaborate and create in a supportive environment.
Students and community members interact directly with luminaries in the field, learning first-hand from those who define modern dance.
The ADF’s wide range of programs include: education, performances, awards, national and international professional services, communtity services, and humanities and media projects.
