Lecture Demonstration at La Jolla Country Day School

Friday, February 19th, 2010 by malashockdance

Did you know that in addition to our Company and School we also offer Education Outreach programs throughout San Diego?  One of our programs, Artists in Motion, takes place each week with upper school students at La Jolla Country Day School (LJCDS).  Last Tuesday, we took the Company up to LJCDS to give a special Lecture Demonstration.

Students in the Artists in Motion program performed a work in progress, choreographed by Teaching Artist and Education Director Molly Puryear.  The Malashock Dance Company then performed three short works for the students.  Molly led the Lecture Demonstration, providing context for the students to understand modern dance in three different ways.

Malashock Dance on Tour!

Friday, February 12th, 2010 by malashockdance

Malashock Dance is back on the road! We have been working with NY booking agent Jodi Kaplan of Kaplan & Associates and will be traveling to the St. Louis area. We are excited to be touring and sharing our work.

On March 30th, Malashock Dance will travel to Southern Illinois University (SIU) to perform in their Arts & Issues Series.  Malashock Dance will perform on April 1st at Dunham Hall.  The concert will feature work from LET’S DUET, SHADOW OF MERCY and will also showcase Michael’s first work for the company, WAYWARD GLANCES.  Additionally, John and Michael will lead master classes at the university and in the Edwardsville/St. Louis community.

Help us make this tour a success!

Our goal is to raise $9,100 to help cover the cost of the tour. Malashock Dance is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and your generous support enables us to continue sharing our artistic vision across the country—raising the profile of Malashock Dance and attracting more attention and resources to the San Diego arts community.

As of this morning, we have raised $1,800 toward our goal.  Help us reach our goal by donating toward the tour or sponsoring a specific dancer:

Michael Mizerany
Bradley R. Lundberg
Christine Marshall
Greg Sample
Lara Segura
Nicholas Strasburg

A Huge Thanks to SCPA & Francisco Ruvalcaba!

Monday, February 1st, 2010 by malashockdance

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of presenting a lecture demonstration with the San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts.  Students from SCPA and COSA performed an excerpt of Missa Brevis , a piece choreographed by José Limon.  Francisco Ruvalcaba, a San Diego native and principal dancer for the Limon Dance Company, has been working with the students and also presented a lecture for the audience.

Congratulations to everyone involved!  The students have been working incredibly hard, and they looked amazing.  We will be excited to welcome some of them back to our studio for our upcoming Master Class Series and our Summer Intensive!

We can’t share the entire performance, due to copyright issues, but we have been given permission to share the following clip from yesterday’s event.  Enjoy!

In 2010, we resolve to continue to put emotion in motion .  As a premier California dance company, we create, educate, and collaborate .  For those of you who aren’t familiar with our mission statement, there it is!  You can learn more about our mission and programs on our website .

How can you get involved in our mission this year?

1.    Take a dance class! Each class at the Malashock Dance School helps you put emotion in motion.  Classes for kids and adults, beginners through professionals, help students grow as dancers and as people.

2.    Attend our Studio Series in April and May! The “On The Spot” Studio Series in April is an opportunity to witness the actual creative process of new choreography being made by John Malashock, while the “Work in Progress” Studio Series in May unveils the first round of choreographic “sketching” with Company dancers.

3.    Join our mailing list! We provide monthly newsletters and occasional announcements to make sure you know what’s going on at Malashock Dance.

4.    Volunteer with us! Volunteers help us in the office, at performances, around town, and even by serving on our Board of Directors.

5.    Donate! As a nonprofit organization, Malashock Dance relies on your generosity to provide new artistic creations, professional performances, and high-quality dance training and education outreach programs.  You can also directly support our Scholarship Program .

Whatever your level of involvement, we look forward to seeing you at Malashock Dance this year!

A Peek at the New Works Workshop

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 by malashockdance

Many parents and students are familiar with our state-of-the-art dance studio in San Diego, our dance classes for kids and teens, and our dance classes for adults.  But several times a year, adult students join us because of their love of dance or their dance career aspirations for workshops that offer a professional dance experience.

Our New Works Workshops , as well as our Summer in San Diego dance intensive, offers students an opportunity to learn new choreography from Artistic Director John Malashock and Associate Artistic Director Michael Mizerany (as well as guest artists in the summer).

Over Thanksgiving weekend, eight students joined John Malashock in the studio for the New Works Workshop.  Students worked four hours a day for three days, learning choreography and receiving individual coaching.

" Working on new dances with an experienced choreographer is, by far, the most effective and direct way of learning new skills in dance.  Dance is a ‘handed down’ artform, and there is no better way for dance students to broaden their abilities than by being in a situation like this." - John Malashock, Artistic Director

See some video clips of their experience here:

See the New Works Workshop students perform the finished piece, "Thinking Out Loud," next week:

See Academics in Motion this weekend!

Friday, November 13th, 2009 by malashockdance
When I started working at Malashock Dance, I only had a vague idea of what “Education Outreach” meant.  What really happens when the teacher walks into the classroom?  Talking with Molly Puryear (our Education Director and an AMAZING teacher!), I began to get a sense for what goes on in the classroom.  After visiting a couple Education Outreach classes, I got a much better picture of the scope—and the variety—of our outreach activities.  So I started thinking, "How can I explain these outstanding programs to everyone else who supports Malashock?"

I am now working with Molly to get our brand new Flip cameras (woohoo!) into the classrooms, so that we can literally show you what is going on in our incredible dance education programs: The Malashock Dance School, Emotion in Motion at Balboa Park, Academics in Motion at Freese Elementary, Dance at La Jolla Country Day School, and the Liberty School here at NTC Promenade.  But I want to share a few opportunities for you to take a peek right now:

•    Turn on your TV Saturday morning to KUSI!  Some of our students from Freese Elementary will be sharing what they have learned about dance and the solar system Saturday at 8:50 a.m. on KUSI/Channel 9!

•    Visit the SDUSD Arts Magnet Fair Saturday afternoon: Our Freese Elementary students will be performing at 1 p.m. at the Recital Hall in Balboa Park.

•    But before you go, watch this video to get an idea of what Academics in Motion is all about!

I am looking forward to sharing even more great photos and video of our Education Outreach in the coming days!

What do the Directors do after a show ends?

Monday, October 19th, 2009 by malashockdance

Associate Artistic Director Michael Mizerany shares what it is like once the curtains have closed on a show—and what he does with the rest of his time.

What was the best part of seeing your choreography on stage?

Seeing WAYWARD GLANCES come together as a dance piece, as an idea.  Also, seeing the audience react the way I wanted them to react—you never know how the audience will respond to a dance piece!

What do you like most about SURFACE TENSION being over?

I don’t have to stress anymore about my first time premiering a work with Malashock Dance!  And I don’t have to worry about compartmentalizing.  It was hard to dance in two pieces plus be the choreographer for another.

What do you like least about SURFACE TENSION being over?

Now I have to go back to the day-to-day work of running the company: booking tour dates, talking with presenters, making sure the information on our website is up to date.

What is going on now that SURFACE TENSION has ended?

Our performance for Classics 4 Kids is coming up in just three weeks—It’s never over!  I am also back to the administrative side of my job.

Check out EVERYBODY WANTS YOU , an excerpt from the Malashock Dance performance of Michael Mizerany’s WAYWARD GLANCES :
