Summer Intensive Success!

Friday, July 23rd, 2010 by generaladmin

It is hard to believe another MALASHOCK DANCE SUMMER INTENSIVE is over.  If flew by in a blink of an eye.  The students were wonderful dancers and wonderful people to boot.

During the first week, I reset John Malashock’s TRIBES.  Luckily, I had just taught this piece to the Malashock company dancers so it was fresh in my head.  I taught the 1st section which is basically 6 solos followed by giant leaps, high kicks and backache inducing arches to the floor.  Well then, what to do?  I taught them the piece and it was looking terrific — do I really want to spend another week cleaning?  Naw, let’s teach them some more repertory!  After going home and culling over the possibilities, I decided on THE CURSE OF MILHAVEN section from LOVE & MURDER.  THE CURSE OF MILHAVEN follows the homicidal exploits of a 14 year-old girl named Loretta (but you can call her Lottie) who violently murders half the town. With music by Nick Caves and The Bad Seeds and hilarious choreography by John Malashock, this piece is a hoot and a half.  And the dancers — they had a blast.  They reveled in the twisted, morose movements (nicknamed "Monster Sit-Ups", "Frankenstein Hands", and "Zombie Hip Hop").

Bradley Lundberg, company member with Malashock Dance, set a section of his work SWEET SUITE, to the music of Coldplay, and Keith Johnson, Artistic Director of KEITH JOHNSON/DANCERS, set two sections from DIVINITY BLUEPRINT with music by Johannes Brahms.  Brad and Keith did a great job with the students and their pieces looked amazing.

John and I both set new work.  I premiered UNTAKEN with music by KODO and John premiered PAPER SKIN with music by The Balanescu Quartet and Zoe Keating.  It was a real privilege to create movement on these dancers.  They had  stupendous memories. Yowza!  I was so proud of their performances.

To round out the workshop, we had Tsukuru Matasamuru from The Jeffrey Lamont Brown Photography Studio come and take dance photos of the students.  You can see them prominently displayed on their respective facebook page profiles.

Jess Humphrey taught a wonderful Contact/Improv class and was a favorite with all of the students.  Assisted by Malashock Dance dancer Christine Marshall, I led a Partnering Workshop (who knew these guys and gals were so bendy!).  During the last week, John led a Dance Stories mini-workshop.  The students delved into their personal histories to help create choreography.

The Summer Intensive Performance at The Saville Theater looked SO GOOD!  They absorbed so much material in two weeks and performed it breathtakingly.  It was so exciting to watch them all come alive and dance so enthusiastically.

Now Molly, John and I are preparing for THE MALASHOCK DANCE SUMMER INTENSIVE 2011.  Stay tuned!

Malashock Recommends: YDance! Camp (5-8yrs)

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 by generaladmin

YDance! is a week-long dance camp held at The Malashock Dance School, that is made possible by a partnership with The Peninsula Family YMCA.  During these busy summer months, many families are looking for camps that will keep their kids happy, active, and curious for a week or so.

The Malashock Dance School is proud to facilitate a camp where 5-8 year-old students are engaged in a variety of healthy, creative, physical activities that will explore dance as a medium for creation, performance, and even story telling.  Students involved will become active as choreographers, building self-esteem and social cooperative skills along the way.  They will explore the possibilities of space, time, and energy as they play games, learn dances, and identify new ways of moving.  Sounds fun, right?  Well, don’t tell the kids, but there happens to be a few other reasons why dance camp is a great choice…

·    In addition to being listed as a core academic subject in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, dance is an opportunity for students to explore kinesthetic learning, or learning by actually carrying out a physical activity, rather than listening to a lecture or merely watching a demonstration.  This is the least used learning style in a traditional classroom setting, and may be a hidden strength of your child!
·    The arts, including dance, teach children to absorb information and communicate effectively using words, images, sounds, and movement.  These are the tools they must master in order to develop the creativity and determination necessary to compete in the global information age.
·    The Malashock Dance School is committed to your child, and our community.  By supporting partnerships like YDance! you will also reap the benefits of both established organizations and all they have to offer!

YDance! Camp will be held from 9am-12pm August 16-20, 2010

Malashock Dance through Summer

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 by generaladmin

The Malashock Dance Summer Intensive is fast approaching and it will be two weeks of non-stop dance featuring classes in technique, new works, repertory (not only Malashock repertory but also repertory by guest artists Keith Johnson and Bradley Lundberg), as well as mini-workshops in Dance Photography, Partnering, Contact Improvisation and Dance Stories (with John Malashock).

With regard to my piece for my New Works class, I have found some wonderful music by KODO that is both exhilarating and inspiring.  Anyone who knows my movement, knows the piece with be fast-paced, somewhat leggy and a lot of fun.  In repertory, I will be resetting sections of TRIBES (choreography by John Malashock), which was just performed at the Jewish Arts Festival this past June.

New works, repertory and more will be performed at the Summer Intensive Showcase at The Saville Theater on July 17th.  And remember, if you would like to be an apprentice or company member with MALASHOCK DANCE, you can use the Summer Intensive as your audition. We have a full season of rehearsals, performances and touring, including:

CHAGALL/TRIBES at Oceanside Museum of Art in October 2010, MALASHOCK/RAW in November 2010 and the premiere of THE FLOATING WORLD at the San Diego Museum of Art over four weekends in April 2011.

CHAGALL & TRIBES at the Jewish Arts Festival

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 by malashockdance

Chagall: San Diego Jewish Arts Festival

CHAGALL and TRIBES came together wonderfully at the Jewish Arts Festival.  The performances went smoothly and the reviews were stellar.  The music from Hot P’stromi was amazing.  It is always a privilege and also a challenge to perform with live music.  It never sounds the same as the CD.  The tempos change, and, occasionally, complete measures of music disappear.  That being said, it really kept the dancers on their toes, so to speak, and also kept the performance alive and fresh.

Malashock Recommends Chagall at the Jewish Arts Festival

Chagall Rehearsal

John Malashock and Yale Strom decided to combine forces in December ‘09 to create a collaborative dance/musical celebrating the life and work of Marc Chagall. Yale Strom is a masterful composer of Eastern European folk music of the soul. This program features a short concert by Yale Strom and Hot P’Stromi, followed by an encore performance of Strom/Malashock’s 1993 collaboration, Tribes. The program concludes with a premiere of three sections of this new work in progress, Chagall, on June 10, 12 & 13. Chagall will combine Yale’s compositions, live musicians, singers, and live dance performance of John Malashock’s vision. They have taken inspiration from the art work and life of Marc Chagall, in particular his various relationships with the women in his life.

The colorful art, life, and relationships of iconic artist Marc Chagall are perfect subjects for a unique, imagistic, and fantastical portrayal through music, dance, and animated digital scenery.  Though Chagall remained firmly rooted in his Jewish identity throughout his life and work, everything about his remarkable career transcended his humble beginnings in Vitebsk, Belarus – a community that shaped his imagery for life.

Chagall’s fanciful imagery and unique sense of color are unparalleled in their universal appeal.  While his work clearly speaks for itself, and the success of his career is legendary, what makes Chagall a fascinating character are the series of relationships with women in his life – on whom he was utterly and thoroughly dependent.  His adoring and adored mother, Feiga-Ita; Thea, his teenage first love; Bella Rosenfeld, his first wife, muse, true love of his life; Ida, his daughter and business manager; Virginia Haggard McNeal, his housekeeper turned lover for seven years; and finally Valentina ‘Vava’ Brodsky, who brusquely took over all aspect of Chagall’s life and work in his later life – making him wildly rich and famous.

“In our life there is a single color, as on an artist’s palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love.” —Marc Chagall

Don’t Miss the Malashock Dance School’s Spring Showcase!

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 by malashockdance

Spring Showcase 2009

Once a year, at the annual Spring Showcase , The Malashock Dance School embraces the opportunity to show off our talented and dedicated dance students and faculty in a public performance.  It is a time for us to show the trajectory of the school, which facilitates classes for dancers ages 3 through adult, and can eventually lead to professional level training and career opportunities.

No, we will not make you sit through hours of three-year-olds in tutus, but we will allow our Teen and Adult dancers to entertain and move you in a dynamic evening of dance at San Diego City College’s Saville Theater on June 5th at 7pm.

In keeping with our mission to create, educate, and collaborate, The Malashock Dance School Spring Showcase features choreography created by our outstanding faculty including work by Julianne O’Brien Pedersen, Erica Buechner, and Molly Puryear.  Associate Artistic Director Michael Mizerany will be presenting new work created in a weekend-long choreography intensive for our intermediate and advanced dancers, and Artistic Director John Malashock will be presenting repertory performed by Malashock Dance Company members.

Please join us June 5th at the Saville Theater to celebrate Malashock Dance and The Malashock Dance School .

New Works Workshop: A Whirlwind Challenge

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 by generaladmin

The New Works Workshop was so much fun: 10 hours with 15 great dancers, a choreographers’ dream. The first day was especially fun — teaching phrase work, arranging it, drilling it and cleaning it. The dancers were tireless; they definitely met the challenge head on. It was so amazing to see how they ate up the movement — over and over and over again. I was quickly advised by the lovely ladies to stop saying, "One more time," and start just saying, "Again," because it was never just "one more time." Your observations are duly noted.

The second day I noticed many bruises, taped feet and ace bandages, but that couldn’t stop the New Works Workshop ladies. Again, they had incredible energy and excitement. We worked on more phrase work, some partnering and some scary lifts. Despite all this they could not be deterred, and we finished the work midway through the day, spending the rest of the time cleaning and refining. After ten hours of hard work and impressive determination on the dancers behalf, they look incredible.

I am so proud of what they achieved in only two days and am very excited to see the audience’s reaction at the showcase in 2 weeks time. So make sure you don’t miss the premiere of this new work (title TBA) at the Malashock Dance School Showcase on June 5th at 7 pm at the Saville Theater. Buy tickets online at www.MalashockDance.org

Don’t Miss the New Works Workshop!

Friday, May 21st, 2010 by malashockdance

Students in a New Works Workshop at Malashock Dance

I am really excited for my New Works Workshop this weekend at Dance Place San Diego — it is going to be amazing this year! I have 16 dancers participating, and I can’t wait to start working with each and every one of them. We’ll meet Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., and then one more time to review/clean before the piece premieres at the Malashock Dance School Showcase on June 5th at 7 p.m. (Though coordinating 16 dancer schedules can be a daunting task, I am an expert in that regard! The Malashock Dance company members have given me plenty of practice!) Needless to say, this is quite a whirlwind, but an always fun and challenging experience for both the dancers and myself. I hope they are ready for me!

Celebrate Your ABILITY to Dance

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010 by malashockdance

Since becoming Education Director for Malashock Dance , I have been compelled daily by the concept of creating access to dance.  Dance has been such an important part of my development, recreation, education, and career, that I feel inseparable from my identity as a dancer.  It is as much who I am, as it is what I do.  The most exciting part of sharing this art form is the opportunity to provide dance classes to children and adults who are not typically engaged in the dance community, and perhaps change people’s perception of what dance can offer people with varying levels of ability.

This year, The Malashock Dance School launched a new program called Dance with disABILITY! This program reaches teens and young adults with varying mental and physical disabilities.  The class provides a safe haven for students to explore the many different ways we approach dance; through rhythm, mechanics, levels in space, personal expression, or social bonding.  Malashock Dance Instructor, Kruciaal Element co-director, and experienced social worker Angel Waali-Villalobos brings the dynamics of Hip Hop, the excitement of improvisation, and clarity of basic technique to this unique group of dancers.

Each week, The Malashock Dance School holds a class for students from St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center , our newest partner in education.  They provide transportation for their clients from their stunningly beautiful facility in El Cajon to The Malashock Dance School.  We provide the weekly class free of charge to these participants!  We also offer a Dance with disABILITY! class that is open to the public, and follows the regular Malashock Dance School tuition rates.  During Spring Semester 2010, Dance with disABILITY! is offered every Friday, 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Dance Place San Diego. Dance with disABILITY! emphasizes the abilities of all individuals and provides an integrated, compassionate, and inspiring environment for personal expression through the medium of dance!
