On Tour - Day One!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 by malashockdance

Everyone made it through day one of the tour—including an early morning flight out of San Diego! Between books and smartphones, the dancers kept themselves entertained at the airport:

In the evening, everyone headed to a Meet and Greet reception hosted by Audrey Tallant, one of Michael Mizerany’s first dance instructors. Michael, you’ve come a long way!

NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman visits Malashock Dance

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman stopped by Malashock Dance at Dance Place San Diego on his tour of arts landmarks in San Diego last Saturday. Landesman was able to see our Adult Intermediate/Advanced Modern Technique class with Erica Buechner. The visit, which included a public Q&A session, was an opportunity for Malashock Dance as well as arts organizations throughout San Diego to share their successes and challenges with providing arts to the community. Read more about Landesman’s "Art Works" tour on SignOnSanDiego.com.

Malashock Recommends: San Diego Latino Film Festival

Friday, March 12th, 2010 by malashockdance

Last night kicked off the 17th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival , which goes through March 21 at UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas at Hazard Center. The festival is an opportunity to enjoy some of the best Latino films of this year as well as to celebrate Latino visual artists and musicians.  Malashock Dance Artistic Director John Malashock and Executive Director Paloma Patterson both attended the kickoff to this year’s festival last night, and the whole staff is now talking about which films to attend!

Don’t miss the festival workshops and panel discussions —great for anyone from a film lover (like me!) to a filmmaker (like John Malashock!) and everyone in between. Curious about John’s film background? While you won’t see his films in the Latino Film Festival, you can get more information about his dance films on our website.  Also, check out the MALASHOCK/DANCE ON SCREEN workshop this summer, where filmmakers, choreographers, and dancers can learn more about creating dance films!

What is the Studio Series?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 by malashockdance

As the Company prepares to go on tour at the end of March, the rest of the staff here at Malashock Dance is preparing for what comes next: The Studio Series . What is the Studio Series? It is your opportunity to experience the creation of new choreography for our upcoming project, The Floating World .

The Studio Series is a behind-the-scenes peek at how choreography is created and rehearsed in a professional dance company.  Ever wondered how John Malashock comes up with his moves? Come into our studio April 10-11 as John creates choreography on the spot with Company dancers. Then return to the studio May 15-16 to see how the choreography has developed after a month of rehearsal.

See how Company dancers learn movement—and enjoy the laughs when things don’t go as planned! Then return for the project’s premier to see how the choreography evolves into a full work. The Studio Series is also a chance to ask questions of the artists involved, especially if you join us on April 10 and May 15 for the Meet the Artists receptions.

The Floating World is an interdisciplinary collaboration with filmmaker/video artist Tara Knight, produced in conjunction with the San Diego Museum of Art’s exhibit of Japanese Woodblock Prints and premiering in spring 2011 at SDMA’s Copley Auditorium.

Recap: Master Class with John Malashock

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 by malashockdance

John Malashock - 4 Sundays in February

Sunday was the last class in our 4 Sundays in February Master Class Series!  John Malashock, Artistic Director of Malashock Dance, gave a two-hour master class, teaching his technique and repertory.  Watch this video of excerpts from the class:

Click here to watch this video on Youtube.

Everyone was excited to take class with our resident master, who encouraged students to explore the limits of tension and release in each phrase of movement.  It was a fun way to finish this fantastic series!

We have had such a positive response from students, and so many suggestions for other master teachers/choreographers,  that we are already planning for our next 4 Sundays master class series!  Keep an eye out for it!
