Fun at Friday Night Liberty

Monday, November 30th, 2009 by malashockdance

Last month, we participated for the first time in Friday Night Liberty , a FREE evening of art, music, food, drink, and exhibits at NTC Promenade in Point Loma.  We screened our dance films LOVE & MURDER and SOUL OF SATURDAY NIGHT.

During a break from the films, we turned on some music—of course, we couldn’t help but dance, too!  Michael (Mizerany, Associate Artistic Director) wowed us all with his amazing memory for choreography.  We caught a video of him dancing "Spinning Away," a piece that John (Malashock, Artistic Director) choreographed last year.

Join us for more fun at Friday Night Liberty this Friday, December 4, at 5 p.m.   We will be in the Green Room at Dance Place San Diego, along with Jean Isaacs from San Diego Dance Theater.  Watch some great dance films, socialize, and check out the great photography of all three resident dance companies!  You can also explore the rest of the activity at NTC Promenade—there are over a dozen other arts organizations participating!

“Group of Four” San Diego Arts Organizations Join Forces With Member Offers

Monday, November 23rd, 2009 by malashockdance

We are ready to announce a new collaboration with three other major San Diego arts organizations: Orchestra Nova San Diego, Cygnet Theatre, and the Museum of Photographic Arts.

This is a great opportunity for us and for all of our members!  We will be helping to promote each other’s events, and as a result all of our members will get special offers from each organization.  The best part will be 2-for-1 tickets for members, subscribers and donors of each organization to each of the other organizations!

Here is what each organization has to say about the collaboration:

"We are excited to be working with our friends at Cygnet, Malashock and MoPA to bring our individual artistic offerings to more San Diegans through this new program. In these difficult times, creative collaboration is more important than it’s ever been before and I really believe that partnerships like this will be key for the arts to not only survive but thrive," said Tyler Richards Hewes, executive director, Orchestra Nova San Diego.

"It is also a wonderful opportunity for us to give our most loyal patrons and supporters a little extra value," said Bill Schmidt, executive director of Cygnet Theatre. "We are hopeful this collaboration will help foster greater interest in these four art disciplines."

"This partnership is a testament to the strength of our respective organizations, as well as of San Diego’s arts community at-large. The artistic programming that each organization contributes has proven to be great and now, with this collaboration, will flourish even more. It is wonderful to be working with our friends to provide San Diegans a new, affordable opportunity to enjoy the rich and diverse art programs that this city has to offer," said Deborah Kochko, executive director, Museum of Photographic Arts.

"There is truly nothing more effective than a group of people working together toward a common goal. Malashock Dance is proud to share a synergistic vision with Cygnet, MoPA and Orchestra Nova of providing high quality art programs to entertain and educate our audiences. This new partnership is a great opportunity for all of us to share our message across multiple artistic disciplines - engaging and inspiring a much wider range of arts lovers." - John Malashock, Founder, Malashock Dance.

See Academics in Motion this weekend!

Friday, November 13th, 2009 by malashockdance
When I started working at Malashock Dance, I only had a vague idea of what “Education Outreach” meant.  What really happens when the teacher walks into the classroom?  Talking with Molly Puryear (our Education Director and an AMAZING teacher!), I began to get a sense for what goes on in the classroom.  After visiting a couple Education Outreach classes, I got a much better picture of the scope—and the variety—of our outreach activities.  So I started thinking, "How can I explain these outstanding programs to everyone else who supports Malashock?"

I am now working with Molly to get our brand new Flip cameras (woohoo!) into the classrooms, so that we can literally show you what is going on in our incredible dance education programs: The Malashock Dance School, Emotion in Motion at Balboa Park, Academics in Motion at Freese Elementary, Dance at La Jolla Country Day School, and the Liberty School here at NTC Promenade.  But I want to share a few opportunities for you to take a peek right now:

•    Turn on your TV Saturday morning to KUSI!  Some of our students from Freese Elementary will be sharing what they have learned about dance and the solar system Saturday at 8:50 a.m. on KUSI/Channel 9!

•    Visit the SDUSD Arts Magnet Fair Saturday afternoon: Our Freese Elementary students will be performing at 1 p.m. at the Recital Hall in Balboa Park.

•    But before you go, watch this video to get an idea of what Academics in Motion is all about!

I am looking forward to sharing even more great photos and video of our Education Outreach in the coming days!
